Fathom Transport Index (FTI)

About the index

The Fathom Transport Index (FTI) tracks the volume of finished and raw materials as they move around the global economy, as a single index. The idea is that as production and distribution are close complements, evidence that goods are being shipped should be also be a good indicator that activity in general is rising. And as freight data are often available ahead of official production data, the FTI should provide a timely indicator of the direction and volume of production and trade.

The FTI uses national data on freight volumes, transported by whatever means (rail, road, air, sea/other water), to produce national indices which are then weighted by GDP shares in global GDP.
