What should President Biden do about the harsh US tariffs on Chinese imports that he inherited from his predecessor? Trump’s tariffs have been costly for US firms and consumers that rely on Chinese goods, and prompted higher Chinese tariffs on US exports, cutting bilateral trade. On the other hand, the tariffs have at least ended the heavily one-sided tariff regime before 2018, in which the US was the loser. There are cogent reasons why Mr Biden should play the long game and not merely stick with the current tariff regime with China, but also use it to reshape US trade so that US friends and allies do better out of the arrangements.
