There has been a lot of work, of varying merit, looking at the possible impact of AI on employment in future, but very little on the impact right now. However, current impacts are visible if you look outside the pool of light cast by traditional macro variables. We have taken two approaches in our search for impacts, and made two broad findings: first, that non-generative AI is currently complementary to jobs while generative AI displaces some jobs, especially in high-tech sectors.
